  • Label all boxes and keep a list for easy reference.
  • Pack storage space carefully leaving air space around the perimeter for ventilation. Leave a walkway to the rear of your space for access and place frequently used items near the door.
  • Use furniture drawers for delicate items, specially wrap and label them as "FRAGILE". Bubble wrap and packing paper are excellent for these purposes. When packing delicate items in boxes place layer of packing inside the bottom and top of the box. Remember to place the most fragile items at the top and fill all pockets with packing. Do not stack other boxes on top of the fragile items.
  • When packing toys or smaller objects, remember to fill boxes completely, stuffing open areas with plain newspaper to prevent collapsing when stacked.
  • Be careful not to store anything combustible, (such as paint and chemicals), or perishable items such as food that is not sealed.
  • When storing lawn and garden equipment, drain any fluids before storage to avoid corrosive damage. Make sure equipment is clean and oiled to retard rust.
  • Use trashcans to store shovels, hoes and rakes.
  • Always use high quality LOCKS on your unit. LOCKS are available for sale, ask a manager for their recommendation.
  • Mattresses should be covered and stored flat on level surfaces.
  • When storing delicate heirlooms, use especially constructed boxes, such as wardrobe boxes, label these boxes as "FRAGILE".
  • Larger appliances, such as stoves and refrigerators, provide additional space for storing towels, blankets, etc. Any equipment with sealing doors, such as refrigerators, should be stored with the door slightly ajar.
  • Furniture should be on corrugated cardboard or a plastic sheet. Stand sofas on end and disassemble furniture, wrapping legs in paper. If furniture cannot be disassembled place item on padding top down so legs are pointing up. Place a light dust cover over furniture.
  • Use protective covers and treat wood surfaces before storing.
  • When storing business files and inventory, label all boxes and construct aisles so files are easily seen and accessible. and accessible. Do not place boxes directly on floor, use pallets or skids.
  • Fabric items need to be clean or free from anything that may attract pests.
  • Electrical equipment should be thoroughly cleaned and dry before storing.
